Rumah Makan: Sedap Gurih

I've eaten at Sedap Gurih before in Causeway Bay years ago, but even though the food was good, I never went back mostly because of the service.

Now, I'm usually not very picky when it comes to service. As long as the server doesn't spit in my food or give me attitude, I'm usually very forgiving of mistakes and things like that. I've worked in retail before and I know how horrible customers are, and I don't want to make their jobs more difficult.

When I ate there before, the chick who took my order forgot to give it to the chef and I waited for half an hour before she came by and said, "Have you ordered already?" And she gave me the wrong drink.

I guess if she had apologized or even just looked slightly remorseful, I would have let it go, but she just plopped down and watched television the whole time, not really giving a shit.

Anyway, so I passed by Sedap Gurih last week, and I thought I'd give it another go. Unfortunately, I have to say that, again, while the food is quite good, the service is just as shitty as ever. I mean, they're not rude or anything, they're quite nice, but I don't think I'll be back because I don't want to keep getting food that I didn't order.

It's such a shame because they have a pretty good selection of Indonesian dishes.

You can see how thick the menu is.

The restaurant is clean, and you can buy shrimp chips to go.

Lunch specials.

They have one of the better es campur in Hong Kong.

So this is what went down. I ordered a Nasi Ayam Bumbu Rujak, which is chicken that has been cooked with shrimp paste and coconut milk. The lady took my order and then disappeared. Ten minutes later, another lady showed up and asked me what I'd ordered. I repeated it clearly and politely, and she apparently relayed it to the chef.

When my food came, it was not a Nasi Ayam Bumbu Rujak as you can see from the picture below. They had given me Nasi Ayam Penyet instead. The thing is, the lady who gave it to me realized that it was the wrong order. My Bahasa Indonesia isn't very good, but I can understand enough that I knew that she told the other waitress that they had given me the wrong food. However, the other waitress said, "Don't worry, she won't know." You know, that really bugged me more than them just not realizing my order was wrong.

Me: Excuse me, this isn't Nasi Ayam Bumbu Rujak.
Waitress: But it will take too long to make that. This is already here.

I thought, what would Buddha do? So I tried to be gracious and just accept the order. I mean, the Penyet was good, but I'd been hoping for that coconut milk flavour that the Bumbu Rujak has. They also gave me white meat after I specified dark.

For those of you who are curious. Nasi Ayam Penyet is fairly spicy. I'm about average to slightly above average in terms of spiciness tolerance, and I would consider this a 7 out of 10. If you're sensitive to spiciness, I would recommend avoiding this dish as there are lots of chili seeds in it.

I don't know if I'm just unlucky with this restaurant, and like I said, it's such a shame because the food is good. If you want to take a chance on it, it's at Yee Wo Street in Lok Sing Centre.
