Rumah Makan: Sedap Gurih

I've eaten at Sedap Gurih before in Causeway Bay years ago, but even though the food was good, I never went back mostly because of the service.

Now, I'm usually not very picky when it comes to service. As long as the server doesn't spit in my food or give me attitude, I'm usually very forgiving of mistakes and things like that. I've worked in retail before and I know how horrible customers are, and I don't want to make their jobs more difficult.

When I ate there before, the chick who took my order forgot to give it to the chef and I waited for half an hour before she came by and said, "Have you ordered already?" And she gave me the wrong drink.

I guess if she had apologized or even just looked slightly remorseful, I would have let it go, but she just plopped down and watched television the whole time, not really giving a shit.

Anyway, so I passed by Sedap Gurih last week, and I thought I'd give it another go. Unfortunately, I have to say that, again, while the food is quite good, the service is just as shitty as ever. I mean, they're not rude or anything, they're quite nice, but I don't think I'll be back because I don't want to keep getting food that I didn't order.

It's such a shame because they have a pretty good selection of Indonesian dishes.

You can see how thick the menu is.

The restaurant is clean, and you can buy shrimp chips to go.

Lunch specials.

They have one of the better es campur in Hong Kong.

So this is what went down. I ordered a Nasi Ayam Bumbu Rujak, which is chicken that has been cooked with shrimp paste and coconut milk. The lady took my order and then disappeared. Ten minutes later, another lady showed up and asked me what I'd ordered. I repeated it clearly and politely, and she apparently relayed it to the chef.

When my food came, it was not a Nasi Ayam Bumbu Rujak as you can see from the picture below. They had given me Nasi Ayam Penyet instead. The thing is, the lady who gave it to me realized that it was the wrong order. My Bahasa Indonesia isn't very good, but I can understand enough that I knew that she told the other waitress that they had given me the wrong food. However, the other waitress said, "Don't worry, she won't know." You know, that really bugged me more than them just not realizing my order was wrong.

Me: Excuse me, this isn't Nasi Ayam Bumbu Rujak.
Waitress: But it will take too long to make that. This is already here.

I thought, what would Buddha do? So I tried to be gracious and just accept the order. I mean, the Penyet was good, but I'd been hoping for that coconut milk flavour that the Bumbu Rujak has. They also gave me white meat after I specified dark.

For those of you who are curious. Nasi Ayam Penyet is fairly spicy. I'm about average to slightly above average in terms of spiciness tolerance, and I would consider this a 7 out of 10. If you're sensitive to spiciness, I would recommend avoiding this dish as there are lots of chili seeds in it.

I don't know if I'm just unlucky with this restaurant, and like I said, it's such a shame because the food is good. If you want to take a chance on it, it's at Yee Wo Street in Lok Sing Centre.

Nasi Kandar Line Clear on Penang Road

Call it Nasi Kandar many would swallow saliva remind delicious food that is synonymous with the people of this country.

Rice is often associated with Indian Muslim restaurant owner or 'mamak' who is a connoisseur cook nasi kandar up menu also popular among tourists.

Savory and fragrant Nasi Briyani.
Nasi Kandar Line Clear right on the busy Penang Road has been around for more than forty-five years and is one of the famous Nasi Kandar stall in Malaysia. This place is usually very busy and packed with office workers and tourist alike.

Nasi Kandar Line Clear is located in a narrow alley.

My last visit at Line Clear was during the meet-up with blogger Wilson & wife Rachel who was in Penang with other MAS Bloggers on the Makan Penang Trip.

Straight right into the great meal!

First things first, when you arrive at Line Clear, be prepared to line up and wait if you want to eat. The waiting time depends on the queue. Those lining up at the end of the long queue will have to stand under the hot sun but the movement is relatively fast.

The interesting part of waiting is that I got to watch the food being cooked. The aroma of the pungent curries really had my tummy growling.
Pot of chicken curry & lady finger.
The ever popular prawn curry, yummy!

Besides the curries which are rich in spices flavor, this place offers many delicious dishes to go along with the white rice or the savory and fragrant Nasi Briyani. Just as good are also the curry prawn, fried chicken, fish, squid’s egg and beef. They can be ordered as individual dishes or set on top of the plate of rice. The prices are charged according to your selection. Do take note of what you are ordering.
The Nasi Briyani flavored with many spices is a popular item.
Most customers like to have their rice topped with a mixture (campur) of  the palatable curries and gravies. If you do not fancy having the rice flooded with the gravies, do let them know ahead. This plate of rice with a huge fried chicken drumstick, fish, squid’s egg, fried egg and a small portion of rice cost RM11. Indeed a plate of yummy nasi.

Nasi Briyani with seafood…just awesome!
Nasi Briyani with meaty choices of fried chicken and beef rendang.
The spicy meal was cooled down with glasses of cool sirap limau (lime juice), ais kosong (ice cold water) and sirap ros (rose syrup). This is a food outlet on the island not to be missed! Click here for the Map Location.

Restoran ZK @ Kampung Attap, KL

Restoran ZK

No 76, Jalan Kampung Attap,
50460 Kuala Lumpur.

Tel : 03-2273 9786

This restoran was introduce to me by my colleague few months ago. They claimed that the curry head is damn nice and is huge in size. I am so curious and finally I come to here "Restoran ZK" which is famous for the curry fish head and the deep fried chicken.

The fish head is definitely huge but the taste is not up to my expectation. The curry is nice and delicious. Just only the fish head doesn't taste good. I think is because the curry is not cook together with the fish (i'm just guessing). Well, the fried chicken is great... From far, u can smell the fragrance of the deep fried chicken.

This could be the mother of all fish head curry in the whole of Kuala Lumpur. From a humble shed, ZK has invaded and took control of the shop (corner) nearby and business is still ever good. It’s getting expensive each time you patronize the place. This Fish Head Curry itself costs RM65.00. A red snapper. Rice is the most best drive in KL. Price was not bad, a new fried chicken dish RM4.50. Cheapest fish head curry RM40.00, RM80.00 most expensive in.

I enjoyed this simple sliced onion & green chilli with dark soya sauce and a squeeze of lime in it. It’s really tasty.

A plate of good protein which is a mere stir fried taugeh (bean sprout).
Mutton Curry is also good and available.

Restoran Tanjung Nelayan, Pendas, Gelang Patah, Johor

We decided to go to this seafood restaurant for our late lunch that day. Fad used to stay at Kg. Ladang which is just few KMs away from here. We had white rice with 3 dishes: sotong goreng tepung (fried squids), udang masak sambal (chillied prawns) and sayur campur (fried mixed vege), and I ordered Nasi goreng tanjung nelayan. I must say that the sotong goreng tepung is the best I have had so far as compared to all other seafood or tomyam restaurants.

Being a seafood lover, this place has always been on top of my list. The food tastes great, the prices are affordable and lower than others I had been to, and the views here are just excellent. For the past 4 years of working here in Gelang Patah, I lost count of how many times I had been here, either with friends or family or relatives.
Asam Pedas Ikan Sembilang
Special Menu, Crab Tomyam
It can be quite busy during weekend evenings and public holidays, sometimes with Singaporean families. The fishes, squids, prawns and other sea products are very fresh, as most of the people in the surrounding villages are fishermen. The restaurant is situated just next to Pendas Jetty (some say it is Kg. Ladang Jetty). Just follow the signboard to Pendas, and you will find the signboard to Pendas, and you will find this restaurant on your left at the end of the road (end of the road is the jetty itself).

The menu is extensive, but the followings are what I usually have, and highly recommended:

Fish dishes:
  • Ikan siakap stim sos nyonya (nyonya sauce steamed fish)
  • ikan siakap stim halia (ginger steamed fish)
  • ikan siakap goreng 3 rasa / masam manis (sweet and sour fried fish)
Prawn dishes:
  • Udang masak sambal (chillied prawns)
  • udang goreng mentega (buttered prawns)
Squid dishes:
  • Sotong goreng tepung (fried squids)
  • sotong masak sambal (chillied squids)
Beef dishes:
  • Daging goreng kunyit (tumeric fried beef)
Chicken dishes:
  • Ayam goreng kunyit (tumeric fried chicken pieces)
  • ayam masak sambal / berlada (chillied chicken pieces)
Vege dishes:
  • Kailan goreng ikan masin (fried kailan with salted fish)
  • sayur campur (mixed fried vege)
  • kangkung goreng belacan (fried water spinach with shrimp paste)
 Tomyam:
  • Tomyam ayam (chicken)
  • tomyam daging (beef)
  • tomyam seafood
  • tomyam campur (mixed of chicken, beef, seafood)
Fried rice:
  • Nasi goreng tanjung nelayan
  • nasi goreng USA
  • nasi goreng kampung

If you are planning to bring a large number of people here, I would suggest that you call in at least an hour before your arrival to book, and order the main dishes first. The number to call is:

Tel : 07-5073414

One word of advice though: As the journey from JB is quite far (up to an hour depending on how fast you drive), you will feel hungry on your way there. Upon your arrival, you will be able to finish all the food in less than an hour. Then you will feel sleepy all the way back to JB (the backseat passengers may have been dozed off within 5 minutes of leaving the restaurant), and you will feel hungry again by the time you reach Jalan Skudai.

Restaurants Address is:

Hahahahaha... that was what usually happened to me and whoever I brought every time I went there.
Hahahahahahahahahahah.

Restoran Kari Kepala Ikan SG @ Subang Jaya

I was amused when I first heard of a famous curry fish head restaurant in Subang Jaya 3K complex. 3K actually stands for Kompleks Kemudahan Kemasyarakatan which means public sports facility. This place has fitness gym, swimming pool, football field and badminton court. But when I was told about the restaurant, I was wondering how does it fit into the overall picture.

Strangely enough, the restaurant is there alright, located right next to the main entrance of this complex. It looks like a Malay owned restaurant judging by the signage.

DSC_1087

What was even more surprising is the popularity of this place. The restaurant was literally packed with people during lunch hours.
DSC_1068

My colleague ordered the set promotion which consists of a curry fish head, ayam madu (honey chicken) and mango salad for RM 38.
DSC_1041

The portion of the curry fish head was quite huge. The curry has a thick texture to it and tasted good. I find myself pouring a generous serving of the gravy on my plate of rice.
DSC_1032

The honey chicken has a slight sour-ish taste to it. I would prefer if it was a wee bit sweeter. But it was still nice.
DSC_1045

They also have quite a variety of other stuff to try out.
DSC_1018

For something different, we also took the Mee Goreng Mamak (RM 4.80). Suitable for those who prefer noodles than rice.
DSC_1023

The Thai Tou Foo was another dish we ordered (RM 8). It has a sweet and sour taste to it. The tou foo was crispy on the outside.
DSC_1055

And here is a picture of the big plate of omelet (RM 6) that came with the rest of the food.
DSC_1035

Overall I do enjoy the food a lot. The large number of people coming to eat during lunch time is an indication of the good food that they serve there.
